Art Submission Guidlines
Darwin’s Evolutions is a market for illustration art and we welcome contact with interested artists. We keep a list of artists with whom we want to work and query them when we have opportunities for their talents.
To date, we have had many wonderful pieces of art included in our publication. We very much want to continue this tradition.
Our needs include the following: Cover illustration art, individual story illustration art, and occasional page layout or web graphics. The advance payment price varies slightly with story length or task as follows:
- New cover art for novels: $200
- Licensing of existing art for anthology covers: $100
- Illustration Art, Short Story, Novella, or Novelette: $50
- Web/filler graphics: Negotiated
Artists are also eligible to receive royalties from publications that feature their art. This does not apply to web/filler graphics. For story singles and novels, the artist will receive a 20% share in all receipts that exceed the earn-out cost of producing the publication. For anthologies, all artists will receive an equal share of 20% of the receipts that exceed the earn-out cost of the volume.
Our process of jobbing out illustration work involves allowing authors to review the available examples of various artists on-line galleries and their previous work for Darwin’s Evolutions. The authors then present the editors with their preferred list of artists, which the editors then balance against outstanding jobs, publication schedules, and artist availability/interest in the project.
Historically, the cover art for our anthologies has featured pre-existing artwork that artists were willing and able to license to Darwin’s Evolutions for use. Novels may require custom art if no suitable pre-existing art can be located.
Individual story illustrations are commissioned pieces meant to tie directly with a story that has been accepted for publication. Short story pieces are not required to be in color, but may be submitted as such if the artist so desires. Novelette, novella, and all cover art should be in color. Interested artists will first be queried as to their availability and then sent a manuscript for review upon acknowledgment of their willingness to participate. We require that the art reflect the story in a meaningful, engaging way.
All artists who are interested in working with Darwin’s Evolutions should send us their contact information and either a sample of their work or a link to their on-line gallery via our secure submission page. You can also message or follow us on DeviantArt and express interest there.
